Department of Economics
The Department of Economics was established by Presidential Decree 364/1996 and began its operation in the academic year 1998–1999, based in Ioannina. It is one of the most dynamic academic departments of the University of Ioannina, with a strong focus on scientific excellence, educational innovation, and an international outlook.
The mission of the Department is to advance the science of economics through teaching and research, as well as to train economists with strong theoretical foundations and analytical skills. The Department focuses on the understanding and application of economic theories and tools, aiming to interpret, predict, and address contemporary economic phenomena and challenges.
The Department’s study programs combine courses in fundamental economic theory, quantitative analysis, and applied economic fields, offering students the opportunity to shape a personalized academic profile according to their interests and career goals.
Graduates of the Department are equipped to work in a wide range of professional fields, such as economic policy analysis and planning, banking and financial management, the labor market, education, and economic research. At the same time, the Department continuously develops partnerships with academic institutions, public organizations, and market stakeholders, enhancing its outward orientation, applied knowledge, and students’ opportunities for professional networking.
